2010 Construction Activities
Construction on Stage 1 of the Southwest Rapid Transit Corridor continued throughout 2010 with work on the following projects:
- Construction of the north half of the Transitway Tunnel,
- Construction of the Transitway along Donald Street, Stradbrook Avenue, and in the Fort Rouge Yards.
Transitway Tunnel Construction
Work on the northern half of the Transitway Tunnel began in the fall of 2009 with the relocation of the CN Main line tracks.
Work on the tunnel began with the installation of a land drainage system that connected to the pump station. This was followed by the installation of a steel sheet pile shoring system which allowed for the excavation of the tunnel. Upon completion of the excavation a reinforced concrete tunnel base was constructed to support the tunnel walls and roof slab.
To complete the overall project and open Stage 1 of the Southwest Rapid Transit Corridor by the fall of 2011, will require that construction activities be very intense, at times requiring 7 day a week construction including nights and holidays.
When completed this concrete tunnel (approximately 350 meters long – including wingwalls) will allow the Transitway to run beneath the CN tracks from a location near the east end of Warsaw Avenue (off Pembina Highway) to the other side of the railway tracks behind the Fort Rouge Transit Base at 421 Osborne Street.

Transitway Construction
Preparation for the construction of the Transitway began in 2009 with the reconstruction and realignment of Donald Street, McMillan Avenue, and Stradbrook Avenue as well as the construction of a land drainage system and pumping station beside the CN Fort Rouge Yards.
In late 2009 excavation and base work for the Transitway began. Over the winter the steel sheet pile for the retaining wall between the Transitway and the CN tracks (along Stradbrook) was constructed.
The concrete pavement for the Transitway that runs along Donald and Stradbrook was placed over the summer of 2010 using a slipform paver. After this was complete the New Jersey shaped barriers were also slip formed.
This same process was used for the Transitway pavement that runs through the Fort Rouge Yards.
